Description

Nrrnn STATES PATENT orrro JAMES N. BURTON, OF WARNERVILLE, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,645, dated March 9, 1875; application filed July 20, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES N. BURTON, of Varnerville, in the county of Meriwether and in the State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoes; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of hoes in which the blade is made detachable from the eye, and the eye made to receive several blades or other attachments; and the nature ofmy invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the eye and the blade, whereby the blade can be easily attached and detached, and when attached is perfectly firm and not liable to get loose, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a view of the hoe-blade, showing the eye placed upon it, and a V-shaped slot in the blade in dotted lines. 'Fig. 2 is a central transverse section of the hoe complete, and Fig. 3 is a side View of the eye.
A represents a hoe-blade of any suitable dimensions, provided at its upper edge with a V-shaped notch, a, in the center, and below the point of said notch is a hole, I), through the blade. B represents the eye of the hoe, which is formed on the under side with a downward-projecting V-shaped shield, O, and with a swell, D, extending from the center of the shield to the front edge of the eye. The base of the swell D at the face of the shield is grooved on both sides to form a V-shaped piece, fitting in the notch a of the blade, with a flange, d, projecting a suitable distance over the face of the hoe. Below the point of this flange a hole, I), is made in the shield 0, corresponding with the hole b inthe blade. The blade A is placed on the shield C, under the flange d, the notch or fitting in the grooves in the swell 1), when the parts are fastened together by a bolt, h, passed through the holes in the blade and shield, and tightened by a nut, t'. The hoe-blade is thus secured between the parts D and U with a front and rear bearing. When thus fastened there is no liability of the parts becoming loose, which is often the case in more complicated devices.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the swell D and shield O with a groove between the parts, and connected to the eye B with the hoe-blade A, having a V-shaped notch, a, and fitted between the two parts D and O, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing 1 have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of June, 1874.
JAMES N. BURTON.
