The use of magazines for a large number of cartridges, for instance 100 pieces, is
necessary especially in case of machine guns for-flying machines, as the period during which firing may be continued against another flying machine or against troops either in motion or in a trench or concentrated at certain pointsis very much limited,so that time must be utilized as much as possible,
. and does not permit the magazine to be changed during firing. The only useful shape of magazine for a large number of cartridges during such or similar conditions is'the drum-shaped one, as such a magazine occupies a minnnum of space, and offers a minimum surface for the actlon of wind.
'Flat, box-shaped magazine, if they are to take for instance 100 cartridges, would be far too long and offer too large a surface for action of wind, and will therefore be very diflicult to place in position, and they will prevent the free adjustment of the gun for firing or during the same, while the gun ought to have the largest possible freedom of adjustment, in order that the gun may be directed against and maintained directed against the object, no matter where the latter is situated, and how it alters its position relatively to the flying machine, on which the magazine gun is carried.
The drum-shaped magazine must also be arranged in such a manner that the cartridges may be fed forward continuously, no matter what elevation the machine gun is given during firing. v
All these requirements are fully filled by the cartridge magazine forming the object of the present invention.

Fig. 7 the feeding lever viewed from its free end. The cartridge magazine consistsof a conical casing l, the conicity of which is adjusted to suit the kind and size of the cartridges the magazine is intended to hold.
The house has on one side a tangentially disposed outlet spout 2 adapted to be attached in the spout on the lock frame of the machine gun by way of which the cartridges are introduced into the machine gun. The casing is also fitted with a handle bar 3.
To the bottom of the casing 1 a spiral rail 4:, Figs. 3 and 4, is attached, and a similar rail 5, Fig. 3, is attached to the top plate of the casing, so that two spiral tracks 6 and T are provided inside of the casing adapted to gulde the wide and the narrow end of the cartridges, respectively.
Centrally in the casing a shaft is journalled consisting of two pieces 8 and 9, one of which 8 supports a feeding lever 10, 11, 12, while the other piece passes through a spring house 13 attached to the top plate of the casing. In the spring house there is provided a powerful spiral spring 14, one end of which is attached to the wall of the house 13, while its other end is connected to the shaft portion 9. The two shaft portions 8 and 9 are interconnected in such a manner that they revolve together, for instance by means of a lug 15 on the shaft part 9, the said lug engaging a notch 16 in the shaft part 8, Figs. 3 and 5. The said shaft part is fitted, at the end journalled in the bottom of the casing 1, with an incision 17 for a suitable key by means of which the shaft 8,
