" i spawn-eta ri in J 1 l amw\? t ;-l l- 'Belati-n' t Antoni" ti Glpl$i-QiWl1lClI the This invention relates to automatiU'guns,
particularly those of the Vickers type, V
- According to the invention a hollow trunnion is provided on the cartridgefeed side v v of the gun and is made of sufliciently large bore to permit of the passage of ammunltion through it tothe cartridge feed mecha- 7. nismof the gun, wherebyavoi'ding difii'culties' which are at present sometimes experienced, especially with high angle guns, due to the carriage impeding the free entranceof the ammunition to, the feed box'of the gun. When belt or strip ammunition is used the other, trunnion is also made hollow and of i 2. sufi'ieient bore to permit of the passage of the empty cartridge belt or the clips or links .of thestrip; i r
In order that the said invention may be p Qclearly understood and readily carried} into effect, the same will now; be described more fully with reference to the accompanying 'ing anautomatic gun of the Vicker's type, constructed'in accordance with this inventhe automatic gun tr-unnioned in a carriage [B by means of hollow trunnions V C, C. This carriage, in the example shewn,
type but it may' equallyj well form part of a mounting of any other desired type.
v h ight-hand hollow trunnion is so situated and of'such'a bore asto fullyex- Y -rpos e the cartridge feed opening in-the mechanism casing (see Figure l) so-that a charged cartridge belt or strip can pass from abox in the case of a strip composedof metal slips or links) passes through the l ft-ha d drum contains one-,or more lay ersiof caris imparted during firing so that the car s ,D-(attached to theftrunnion) through the'g said trunnion tothecartridge feed mecha, V nism. The usual feed levers providedin; l
a gun of the Viokers typewould' ensure the cartridge being carried into its correct position immediately'over the barrel axis. 1; It
will be understood,iof-course, that the above 7 7,
described extension of the mouthpiece'of the 1 feed box can be a detachable hopper which j contains the cartridges and which can-bede tachably connected tothefeed box mouthpiece by suitable catches. In another lar- I 'rangement which necessitates the provision ofonly one hollowtrunnion the borev-of'the hollow trunnion can be utilized 'toreceive f acircular drum which may be of the usual operated type, this drum being detachably held by means of suitable catches. J The said tridges placed radially and means are proj 1 vided whereby a'step-by-steprotary motion tridges are ejected from the drum into the entrance; of the feed box; The ordinary feed levers'provided in a gun'oftheVickers V w type. would then'ensu re the cartridges being ately over the barrel axis."
"carried into their correctposition o 'immedi-jy It will be-seen thatby reasonlo'f this'in vention the carriage will not ofler any im pediment at high angles of elevation of the f un to the freeentrance vof the ammunition to'the feed box of'the gun";
What we claim and desire to secure by "Letters Patent-of the United States is V 1. In anoautomatic gun, the;provision on the cartridge feedside ot ahollowtrunnion pattern used in automatic guns of-the'gas" of sufliciently large bore to permit of the passage of ammunition through it to the cartridge feed mechanism of the gun.
2. In an automatic gun, the combination with the mechanism casing, of a hollow trunnion of sufficiently large bore to permit of the passage of ammunition through it to the cartridge feed mechanism of the gun, and means for attaching said hollow trunnion to the mechanism casing.
8. In an automatic gun, the combination with the mechanism casing, of a hollow trunnion on the cartridge feed side of sufficiently large bore to permit of the passage of ammunition through it to the cartridge feed mechanism of the gun, .a second hollow trunnion on the opposite side for the passage of the empty cartridge belt or the clips or links of strip ammunition, and means for attaching said hollow trunnions to the mechanism casing.
- 4. In an automatic gun, the combination with the elements claimed in claim 2, of a box attached to the hollow trunnion for the reception of the charged cartridge belt or mechanism casing and means for feeding cartridges one at a time to the feed mechanism of the gun.
6. In an automatic gun, the combination with the elements claimed in claim 2, of a solid trunnion on the opposite side of the mechanism casing and means located within the hollow trunnion for feeding car tridges one at a time to the feed mechanism of the gun.
