Specification of Ilettern Patent.
' Application filed June 28, 1919. Serial No. 307,322.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WALTER H. Common and CLARENCE H. KEHM, citizens of the United States, and residents of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air-Valve Caps, of which the following is a specification, and which drawingls, forming a part thereof.
he escape of steam from the usual form of air valve as used on steam radiators has been a cause of great annoyance. The sound of the escaping gas has been irritatin and the rising current of air mingled wit the A steam and moisture resulting therefrom has rapidly disfigured the decoration of the walls adjacent the radiator.
The object of the present invention is to avoid this annoyance b providing a cap for air valves that shall irect escaping gases downwardly and retain any free moisture escaping therewith in such a manner as to give the same out slowly to humidify the atmosphere without irritating sound or disfigurement of walls. 4
Preferred embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the drawings in which:
Fi 1 is an elevation of a portion of a ra iator section and an air valve with a valve cap in section, Figs lines 22 and 3--3 respectively of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4 is a central vertical section of a difierent form of the invention.
A portion of a radiator section is shown at 10 and a common form of air valve at 11, having a thread at 12 for reception of a cap. The vent of the valve is designated at 13.
To prevent the flow of gases upward a shell or cap 14 is rovided which, in the form of the invention illustrated in Figs.
1 to 3, is dome shaped. The loWer portion radiators, a cap for said valve comprising a shell having vent openings at its lower of the shell is closed by a diaphragm 15 provided'with a screw threaded opening 16 at its center for attachment to the valve.
Gases vented from the valve into the cap are permitted to escape therefrom by means of vent openings 17 shown in Fig. 2 as being four in number. To prevent any free moisture escaping with the ses a dri cup, as
1.8, is shown which in t e form ustrated,
. 2 and v3 are horizontal sections on To absorb free moisture and prevent hissing sounds, the interior of the shell is shown as filled with absorbent material, preferably cotton gauze, as 20.
In the form of the'invention illustrated in Fig. 4, the shell assumes, in general, the form of a cylinder, as at 21, with the drip or molsture receiving cup integral with the lowerportion thereof, as at 22. The drip .cup is continued upward and inwardly to provide the threaded opening 23 for attachment to the air valve.
The shell in this form of the invention is shown as closed at the top by a cover 24 adapted to screw upon the shell and. provided with a skirt, at 25, ofi'set outwardly embodiments of an invention that willattain the ob ects specified and that various changes in details thereof may be made without departing from the spirit of the v invention.
We claim as our invention:
1. In combination, an air valve for a steam radiator, a capfor said valve comprising an impermeable shell, said shell havinlg downwardly directed vent openings. 2. n combination, an air valve for a steam radiator, a cap for said valve comprising an imperforate upper surface and having vent openings adapted to direct escaping gases downwardly and an absorbent materlal in said shell.
3. In combination, an air valve for steam Patented Dec. 30, 1919.
4.'An air valve cap comprising a shell imp'erforate at its upper surface, having vent openings, means to direct vented matter downwardly, and means to attach said shell to a valve.
5. An air valve cap comprising a shell imperforate at its upper surface, having vent openings, means to direct vented mathaving an im erforate up er surface and downwardly irected per orations in its lower portion, a drip cup' below said rations, and means for attachment 0 sald shell to an air valve.
7. An air valve cap comprising a shell \having an .im rforate upFer portion and idownwardly irected per oratlons in its lower portion, a dr1 cup below said perforations, a filling o absorbent material in said shell, and means for attaching said shell to an air valve. '8. An all valve cap comprising a suberfostantially hemis herical shell, a dia hr a m closing said shel having a screw t re ed opening adapted to be applied to an air valve and vent openings a jacent said so ew threaded opening. I
9. An air valve cap com rising a substantially hemis herical she a dla hra closin said shell having a, screw t ea ed centra' opening for attachment of the cap to a valve and vent openings near the maran annular drip cup semi-cylindrical in cross section secured below said vent openings and a filling of absorbent material in said shell.
