WINGED PARACHUTE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 19,1918.y
Application led August 6, 1917. Serial No. 184,585. l
T 0 all whom t may Concern.'
Be it known that I, Pn'rno TATARYN, a subject rof the Emperor of Austria, resident 0f Chester, county of Chester, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Winged Parachutes, of which the following is a specification.
lThis invention relates to improvements in winged parachutes, and has as its special object the provision of means whereby an operator may be partially sustained in the air during the action of flying.
A 'further object is to provide a flexible garment adapted to be attached to the wrists and ankles of the operator, the same acting in the manner of wings whereby Hight may be accomplished.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel design, construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in whiche Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a garment made in accordance with the Vinvention. Y
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the center line of the same.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a front elevational view showing a modified form of garment.
Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 5--5 of Fig. 4, and
Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing one .of the clamps applied at the ankle of the operator.
The invention comprises a Ysheet of fabric 10, the triangular lower sides 11 of which extend substantially level with the wrist of an operator when the arms are extended outwardly, and to the feet when spaced widely apart, there being an opening 12 immediately between the feet, while above the arms are other angular portions 111, directed upward to a point substantially equivalent to the top of the operators head, the whole forming a kite shaped structure.
Secured to the lower edge of the sheet are extensions 16, upon which the feet of the operator may be placed, while immediately above are straps or bands 18, arranged in such manner as to be readily secured to the limbs of the operator, as are also similar straps 20 adapted to be attached to the wrist.
Extending between the wrist bands 20 are hollow sleeves 22, joined to a fiexible casing 24, the same extending from the neck-band 25 downward to nearly the ankle band 18, and is provided with a plurality of' buckles 26, enabling the garment to be opened so that the operator may readily enter, presenting the arms through the Sleeve 22, and buttoning the garment in an obvious manner.
A cap or the like 27 is provided for the head of the operator, to which are attached the portions 14 at their highest point, the cap being further sustained in position by support elements 28, attached to the sleeves 22.
Thus when an operator wearing the garment drops from a height in the air, the main body 2&1 will act as a parachute, partially sustaining the weight, while the portion 14, if properly operated by the arms of the wearer inserted through the sleevesr22, materially assists in supporting the operator.
in which the sheet 10 is similarly shaped with angular side elements 11, and converging upper portions 14, a cap 27 being provided as before. i
In this form, the sleeves 30 are secured to the sheet 10, the same being provided with bands 31, suited to the wrists of an operator, while at the bottom are leggings 33 for receiving the lower limbs, which are secured therein by resilient spring clips 85 secured through the openings 36, to t'ne sheet l0, as is also a belt 37 arranged to encircle the waist.'
In both the embodiments shown it is to be understood that the material comprising the parts is of a thin pliable nature, eX- tremely flexible, and yet possess suiicienjt strength for the purpose for which it is designed, and it will be evident that either structure will materially assist in maintaining a person during a Hight in the air.
I-Iaving thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
In Figs. land 5 is shown a modification A winged. parachte comprising a sheet of thin plable'materal, out lto extend rfrom one wrist lcoihe other, Vand from above the sheet, spring .bands combined .therewith Vadaptedto resliently engage Withth'e vexf Atremitesv of` the limbs, a beltV engageable With-the *Wlastl'and a vcap 'engageable .With
