cams nrrzas cc PHoTcLum UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WM. GRAHAM AND L. MCLAREN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
RAILROAD-CAR SEAT.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 11,724, dated September 26, 1854.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM GRAHAM,
of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, and LAURENCE MoLAnnN, a native of the Kingdom of Great Britain, having resided one year last past within the United States and has taken oath of his intention to become a citizen thereof, have invented a new and Improved Railroad-Car Seat for the Purpose of Sleeping or Reclining at Pleasure; and We do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of our invention consists in the double movements of the car-seat, and so arranged as to face either end of the car that may be required by simply shifting the back.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
We construct the carseat in two parts, the lower part or base fastened to the floor of the car, and forming upon its upper edge a perfect circle as shown at (A) in the accompanying drawings, and in which we place friction wheels (B) so arranged that the lower edge of the upper part or seat (C) which forms a corresponding circle with (A) and resting upon the friction wheels (B) can be moved with ease and facility each way, thereby giving the necessary elevation to the leg rests (D) of which there are two-one of which is hinged to the inside of (C) at each end. We also connect the leg rests (D) to the lower part of the base (A) by the means of double levers (E) hinged at both ends, and fastened one end to the leg rests (D) and the other end fastened to the lower edge of the cross rail (F) that connects the two sides of the base (A) together and so constructed that they elevate or lower the leg rest as may be required for the ease and comfort of the person occupying the seat. We also apply the shifting back (G) so arranged as to have a head rest (H) that can be raised to any required height and secured in a permanent position by means of a spring (I)- the head rest moving up and down Without difficulty.
The seatis kept in a permanent position by the means of a bolt (J) which can be removed at pleasure without moving from the seat. And the whole so arranged that by simply moving the back from one side to the other, which together with the combined movements of the upper part of the seat on the friction wheels, and the levers and leg rests as instantly to change the seat from one side to the other.
hat we claim as our invention and wish to secure by Letters Patent is- The levers E, E, in combination with the leg rests D, D, and the movable seat C, constructed and arranged substantially as described.
Vit-nesses THOS. Owsron, WILLIAMS OGLE.
