Description
技术领域
本发明一般涉及用于读取例如条形码符号的标记、并具有不同光反射性部分的光电系统,并且具体地涉及扩大工作范围和/或改变光束截面以便改进系统性能的装置和方法。
背景技术
过去曾经为在标签上或者目标表面上读取条形码符号开发出各种光电阅读器和系统。条形码符号本身是一种标记的编码图案。一般地说,阅读器在光电上变换符号的图形标记成为电气信号,后者解码成为字母数字字符。作为结果的字符描述出目标的和/或与符号关联的目标某些特性。这样的字符典型地包括对于数据处理系统的输入数据,以便在销售点处理、库存控制、商品跟踪等中应用。
在符号中特定的符号元素布置,例如条形和空白,按照编码或符号学规定的规则和定义阐明其所代表的字符。条形和空白的相对尺寸由采用的编码类型所决定,按照条形和空白的实际尺寸。
为对于要求序列的字符编码,可连接元素排列的集合形成完整的符号,其中各字符用其本身对应的元素组合代表。在某些符号学中,用独特的“开始”和“停止”字符表示符号的开始和终结。当前存在一定数量的不同条形码符号学。符号学包括诸如UPC/EAN、39码、128码、Codabar和Interleaved(隔行扫描)2 of 5等一维编码。
为扩大能够在一定符号表面面积量上代表或储存数据的数量,已经开发出多种新的符号学。一种新的编码标准,49码,引入用垂直地堆置元素行代替水平地延伸元素的二维概念。就是,不用一个长行,而采用几个条形和空白的行。49码结构在美国专利No.4,794,239中描述。另一种称作PDF417的二维编码结构在美国专利No.5,304,786中描述。
光电阅读器已经,例如,在美国专利No.4,251,798;No.4,369,361;No.4,387,297;No.4,409,470;No.4,760,248和No.4,896,026中描述,它们全部归属于本发明受让人。这些阅读器一般包括由气体激光或半导体激光构成发射光束的光源。在阅读器中采用激光器件作为光源由于其尺寸较小、成本较低并且功率需要也较低而特别适宜。激光光束在光学上修改,典型地通过聚焦光学组件,形成在预定目标位置上具有一定尺寸的光束点。在目标位置上光束点的截面可接近于不同光反射性符号区域之间的最小宽度,即条形和空白,但点的截面可以较大,并且在某些情况下大于最小宽度的两倍。
在传统的阅读器中,光束被扫描部件沿光的路径引导趋向目标符号。阅读器通过重复地在扫描图案上扫描光束进行操作,例如,通过移动扫描部件跨越目标符号上一条线条或者一系列线条,诸如在光束的路径中设置镜子。扫描部件把光束点扫越符号,跟踪扫描线跨越并超过符号的界限,和/或扫描预定的视野。
阅读器也包括传感器或其功能为探测从符号反射或散射光的光电探测器。光电探测器或传感器位于阅读器中的光路线中,使其具有可至少延伸跨越或少许超过符号边界的视野。从符号反射光束一部分被探测到并且转换为模拟电气信号。数字转换器把模拟信号转换为数字。然后从数字转换器来的数字化信号根据用于符号的特定符号学进行解码。
扫描符号的扫描图案可采取各种形式,诸如反复线条扫描、标准光栅扫描、抖动光栅扫描、鱼骨、花瓣等等。这些光束图案由光束路线中扫描部件的控制运动所产生。典型地,扫描部件被某种形式的扫描马达所驱动而周期性地通过要求的光束图案偏转光束。对于反复线条扫描光束图案,可以采用由一个简单马达所单向地旋转的多角形镜子。对于复杂光束图案,需要更加复杂的驱动机构。
光束图案执行的频率也是一个需要考虑的重要问题。在给定的时间周期内符号可以扫描的时间越多,符号获得有效阅读的机会就越大。当符号由移动物体携带时,诸如在运输带上移动的包裹,特别重要。
符号也可采用成像器件阅读。例如,可以采用具有二维阵列单元或光传感器的成像传感器件,其中各单元对应于器件中视野的成像元素或像素。这样的成像传感器件可包括二维或面积电荷偶合器件(CCD)或互补金属氧化物半导体(CMOS)器件及相关的电路,以便在视野中产生对应于二维像素信息阵列的电子信号。
因此众所周知采用CCD捕获需要阅读条形码的单色图像,例如在美国专利No.5,703,349中所披露。同样众所周知可采用具有多条掩埋信道的CCD捕获目标的全色图像,例如在美国专利No.4,613,895中所披露。
许多应用要求手持阅读器,其中容纳移动的激光光束器件或成像器件。对于这样的应用,光电部件的布置必须紧凑以便容纳在可能是手枪形状的手持组装件内。此外,这样的阅读器必须轻便并且在结构上结实以便承受由于粗暴搬动而造成的物理冲击。也要求在操作中消耗最低的功率以延长电池寿命。
还希望符号能够相对手持阅读器而言在工作距离广大范围内阅读。在移动激光束器件的情况下,传统上应该在聚焦光学组件中移动一个或多个透镜,并且依次接近于阅读器的近位和离开阅读器较远的远位之间移动激光束的焦点。透镜的移动典型地用机械执行。由于几个原因这是不利的。首先,机械运动产生通过阅读器传播到用户手中的振动,并且也可能产生灰尘而模糊光学仪器。而且,依据扫描速度,震动可产生讨厌、恼人、可闻的嗡嗡声。此外,透镜移动需要驱动机构,该机构又消耗电力,这是昂贵而缓慢,并且不可靠,占用空间和增加阅读器的总体重量、尺寸及复杂性。
一般众所周知曾经建议用液晶透镜调节光学组件的焦点。美国专利No.5,305,731描述一种具有可调焦距长度的液体透镜。美国专利No.5,625,496描述如何变化液体透镜内的折射率。法国公报No.2,791,439和No.2,769,375(和其相当的美国专利No.6,369,954)描述一种可变焦点液体透镜。
发明内容
本发明一个目的是提供一种用于读取数据编码符号扩大阅读器工作范围和性能的改进装置和方法。
本发明另一目的是提供一种在构造上紧凑、轻便、耐用和有效而在操作上可靠的装置,并且因此理想地适合于便携式手持的应用。
本发明还有另外的目的是在光电阅读器中调节焦距和/或改变光束点的截面而不必机械地移动透镜。
在保持这些目的及今后将变得明白的其它方面同时,简单地说,本发明的一个特征在于一种利用光电阅读诸如一维和/或二维条形码符号的标记的装置和方法。
本发明提供一种具有一对沿光路线布置的光传送液体的可变光学透镜,该液体为不能混合的,具有不同光学折射率,和基本上为同样的密度。液体之一在静态下具有形状以便在光学上改变沿光学路线穿过一个液体趋向标记的光线而具有第一光学特性。按照本发明,可以操作一台控制器对于一个液体施加电压以改变其形状,并且在光学上改变光线而具有第二不同光学特性。在移动光束阅读器的情况中,诸如激光二极管的光源发射激光束的光线,并且一个液体的形状的改变使激光束聚焦在沿光学路线相对于可变透镜的不同工作距离。在成像阅读器的情况中,一个诸如阵列的传感器从可变透镜接受光线,并且一个液体的形状的变化使光线聚集在沿光学路线相对于可变透镜不同的成像平面。
控制器对一个液体周期地施加电压,或者在阅读过程中连续地进行,或者只在确定某一特定标记或条形码符号是否已经成功地阅读以后。
可变透镜可包括单个固定透镜,或者在其相对两端的一对固定透镜。一个液体可在静态下径向地对称于光学路线,或者在一种变型中,可沿垂直于光学路线的横向轴线延伸并改变激光束的截面。椭圆形光束截面对于阅读一维符号较佳,而圆形光束截面对于阅读二维符号较佳。改变光束截面使阅读器适应读取损坏或不良的印刷符号。
不同焦距和成像平面之间的改变和/或光束截面的改变不在机械上或物理上移动固体透镜前提下执行,因此在这样的阅读器中可减少噪声、振动和灰尘,以及对于尺寸、重量、功率和体积的要求。可变液体透镜不会随着时间而磨损。

具体的实施方式
图1中参考数字20一般标识用于以光电方式阅读标记的手持阅读器,该标记为诸如条形码符号24,位于其工作范围距离内。阅读器20具有手枪式握持手柄21和手动作用的扳机22,当压下该扳机时,促使光束23指向符号24。阅读器20包括壳体25,其中容纳光源26、光探测器27、信号处理线路28和电池组29。在壳体前面的光传送窗口30使光束23离开壳体,并且容许从符号散射出来的光31进入壳体。键盘32和显示器33有利地设置在壳体的顶壁上以便方便地接近。
在使用时,操作者握持手柄21并使壳体瞄准在符号上和压下扳机。光源26发射经过光学变化的光束并且用光学聚焦组件35聚焦而在符号24上形成光束点。光束穿过分隔器34到扫描镜36,该镜由驱动马达38重复地在扫描速率至少为每秒20次下振荡。扫描镜36反射入射光束到符号24并且使光束点以扫描图案扫越符号。扫描图案可以是沿扫描方向沿符号在长度方向延伸的线条,或者是一系列沿互相正交方向布置的线条,或者是全方向的图案,以上仅说明几种可能性。
反射光31在扫描图案上具有变化的亮度并且穿过窗口30落在扫描镜36上,在该镜上反射到分隔器34上,而依次反射到光探测器27上以便转换成模拟电气信号。如在本行业中众所周知,信号处理线路28使信号数字化并解码析取在符号中编码的数据。
按照本发明,聚焦光学组件35配置成为如图2所示的可变透镜。可变透镜具有壳体40,其中显示为小滴形式的第一液体42和第二液体44沿光路线46布置,该路线如以下在图3-4中所描述,朝诸如将由光电阅读器20读取的条形码符号的标记方向延伸。
液体42、44为光传送性的、不能混合的、具有不同光学折射率和基本上为同样密度。液体小滴42由电气绝缘物质构成。例如,油、链烷(alcane)、链烷混合物,较佳地经过卤化,或者任何其它绝缘液体可以用在小滴42上。液体44由导电物质构成,例如加盐(矿物或其它)的水,或任何其它液体,不论其为有机与否,并且较佳地通过添加离子成分变成导体。
壳体40由电气绝缘的、光传送材料、诸如玻璃构成,较佳地经过硅烷处理或涂有氟化聚合物,或为氟化聚合物、环氧树脂和聚乙烯薄片。壳体40包括绝缘壁48,较佳地具有容器50,其中容纳小滴以对称关系相对于光路线或轴线46。壁48与小滴42相比正常具有低润湿性,但经过表面处理可保证较高的润湿特性并且维持小滴的中心位置而防止小滴展开。容器50还有助于防止这样的展开。
第一电极54延伸进入液体44,而第二电极52位于壁部48以下。这些电极连接于电压源V。这些电极,特别是电极52,较佳地为光传送性。如美国专利No.6,369,954(其整个内容综合在此作为参考)中解释,当有电压施加在电极上时,将建立起改变壁部48对于小滴42的润湿特性的电场。在电场存在下润湿性显著增加。
在没有电压施加时,小滴42一般采取如图2实线所示半球形,其外表面“A”为凸面。当有电压施加时,绝缘壁48的润湿性增加,而小滴42变形并采取如图2中虚线所示形状,其外表面“B”变成具有更小曲率半径的凸面。小滴这样的变形改变透镜35的焦点并且被本发明采用,在工作距离扩大的范围内读取符号24,如以下联系图3-4所描述。
通过例子,在静态下小滴42具有约6mm直径。如果液体44是盐水,其折射率约为1.35。如果小滴是油其折射率约为1.45。对于施加约40v RMS(均方根值)的电压可获得约40屈光度的焦点变化。透镜的响应时间为几百分之一秒,在这种情况下,如果使用周期性电压,其频率可以在50Hz和10kHz(千赫芝)之间,使其周期小于响应时间。
回到图3,图1的光源26显示为激光二极管。扫描镜36和其驱动机构38同样在图3中描述。在可变透镜35中小滴42曲率的变化是造成在附近位置Z1和远处位置Z2之间焦点变化的原因。符号24可以在这些终点极限位置之间任何地方读取,从而改进阅读器的工作范围。
电压较佳地是周期性的,较佳为正方波形驱动电压。正方波形很容易用可变负载循环通过具有内建脉冲宽度调制器线路的微处理器60建立。驱动电压也可以是正弦形或三角波形的信号,在这种情况,电压的幅度控制小滴42的形状,并且依次控制焦距和工作距离。对于一定焦距变化正方波形不需要如正弦波形一样高的电压。例如,许多阅读器使用单个5伏电源。可变透镜需要较5伏更高的电压,因此必须在阅读器内产生较高的电压驱动可变透镜。该产生的电压需要越低,电压产生电路的成本也越低。
当使用正方波形时,焦距变化是通过改变负载循环获得。当使用正弦波形时,焦距变化通过改变驱动电压幅度获得。负载循环的幅度可以通过微处理器或控制器60(较佳地如同信号处理线路28装在同一线路板上)用离散的步幅(数字方式)变化或者连续地(模拟方式)变化。电压也可为不变的直流电压。
在图3的装置中,当阅读时,由扫描镜36正在扫描跨越焦平面扫描的激光束一般横向于光路线或轴线46。控制器60可一直或在选择时间上运行施加周期性电压在可变透镜35上。如此,可对每一次扫描施加电压,或每隔一次施加等等。不但可以在扫描时施加电压,甚至也可在以后施加。电压可以在拉动扳机时开始,或者只在符号已经探测到以后。电压可以自动地施加,或者只在信号分析仪62(较佳地为微处理器)已经确定正在扫描中的符号还没有成功地解码并读取。
图4相似于图3,除去它描述具有传感器64的成像器,较佳地为具有互相正交光电池行及列的CCD或CMOS,以便在或在成像平面Z3及Z4之间任何一处使符号成像,从而对成像器提供焦点扩大的工作范围或深度(其中收集从符号来的光)。如同以前,当周期性电压施加在可变透镜35上时小滴42的形状变化使其获得焦点扩大的深度。
迄今为止的描述中,小滴42的曲率变化是处于两凸面曲率A、B之间。本发明的精神包括在不同的曲率之间使小滴变形。例如,可能小滴的外表面为新月形,即在静态时为凹面,一般为平坦以便当施加第一电压时使光线聚焦于第一焦平面,而当施加不同的第二电压时使其为凸面以便光线聚焦于第二焦平面。
参照图2,可变透镜35在轴向端区域也可具有固定的凸面透镜66,而在对面的轴向端区域具有固定的凹面或平坦-凹面透镜68。这些固定透镜为全部光学系统的一部分并协助其尽量减少任何类型的像差,例如彩色像差。光学系统应该有利地包括孔径光阑(未示),它可以放置在光路线中任何一处。
在一种变型中,小滴42不一定为大体半球形,即对于光学路线46径向地对称,而是如图5所示,沿大体垂直于光路线的横向方向伸长。圆柱形小滴,现在用参考数字标识为70,抵靠在由绝缘壁74形成的槽形容器72中。
当施加周期性电压时,圆柱形小滴70,现在作为圆柱形透镜,改变在趋向符号途中激光束的截面。如此,从激光二极管来的光束截面76大体如图7所示为椭圆形。所阐明的x-轴线沿扫描方向。y-轴线沿符号的条和空白长度方向延伸。
对于一维符号,要求如图6所示更加椭圆形或延长形的光束截面78。对于二维符号,要求如图8所示更加圆形的光束截面80。通过施加周期性电压,圆柱形小滴70可在光学上改变光束截面成为或者是截面78或者是截面80,或者在二者之间。这些形状的改变可连续地或以逐级方式发生,并且在读取损坏或不良印刷的符号中特别有用,从而改进系统性能。
可以看到,焦点变化和/或光束截面变化是不经过任何固体透镜的机械运动而完成的。除去液体,所有可变透镜35的零件可用塑料制成。
本发明也可考虑在光路线中使用多于一个可变透镜。一个可变透镜可用在焦点变化上,而另一个可用来变化光束截面的椭圆度和/或放大倍数(即,放大效果)。类似Petizval透镜多个透镜也可用来减少散光。
本发明还考虑在可变透镜中使用多个电极改变小滴42在不同方向的曲率,从而例如变换球形透镜为圆柱形透镜。光束的最小截面,也称作光束腰,可以改变,并同时光束的椭圆度也可改变。如果需要采用附加(多于二个)电极可以用来改正某些特定像差,不但对于移动的光束阅读器,也对于成像器而言。
在移动的光束扫描器中,不但只有可变透镜可在趋向需要读取的标记出发路线中采用,在反射光线返回光探测器的返回路线中也可采用可变透镜。可变透镜可位于光探测器前面,以便通过改变碰撞在光探测器上反射光的数量而控制光学自动增益。
Claims (20)
1.一种具有不同光反射性零件的、用于光电阅读标记的装置,包括:
(a)具有沿光路线中布置的一对光传送液体的可变光学透镜,该液体为不可混合的,具有不同光折射率和基本上同样密度,液体之一在静态下具有形状以便在光学上改变沿光路线穿过所述一个液体趋向标记的光线而具有第一光学特性;以及
(b)控制器,用于跨越所述一个液体施加电压以便改变其形状,和在光学上改变光线而具有第二光学特性。
2.如权利要求1所述的装置,其特征在于,还包括用于发射光到可变透镜的光源;其中,第一和第二光学特性为沿光路线在相对于可变透镜不同工作距离上的、间隔开的不同的焦平面。
3.如权利要求2所述的装置,其特征在于,光源为发射光线作为激光束的激光。
4.如权利要求1所述的装置,其特征在于,还包括用于从可变透镜接受光的传感器;其中,第一和第二光学特性为沿光路线在相对于可变透镜不同工作距离上的、间隔开的不同的焦平面。
5.如权利要求4所述的装置,其特征在于,传感器为成像电池阵列。
6.如权利要求1所述的装置,其特征在于,还包括用于在标记上扫描光线和视野的至少一个的扫描器。
7.如权利要求6所述的装置,其特征在于,控制器可操作地用于在扫描中连续地施加周期性电压的电压。
8.如权利要求6所述的装置,其特征在于,还包括用于确定标记是否被成功地扫描和读取的分析仪,和其中在确定标记未被成功地扫描和读取后控制器可操作地用于施加电压。
9.如权利要求1所述的装置,其特征在于,所述一个液体在电气上绝缘,和其中另一个液体是导电的,并且其中第一电极设置在所述一个液体的一侧,而其中第二电极浸在所述一个液体对面一侧的所述另一液体中,和其中电压跨越电极施加。
10.如权利要求1所述的装置,其特征在于,可变透镜包括至少一个沿光路线与液体隔开的固定的聚焦透镜。
11.如权利要求10所述的装置,其特征在于,有两个各自具有正及负光学功率的固定的聚焦透镜,和其中两个固定的聚焦透镜位于可变透镜的相对两端。
12.如权利要求9所述的装置,其特征在于,可变透镜具有所述一个液体抵靠在其上的电气绝缘壁,和其中第二电极接触该绝缘壁。
13.如权利要求1所述的装置,其特征在于,所述一个液体在静止状态时环绕光路线径向对称。
14.如权利要求1所述的装置,其特征在于,所述一个液体沿大体垂直于光路线的横向轴线延伸,并且在光学上改变穿过所述一个液体的光线的截面。
15.一种具有不同光反射性零件的、用于光电阅读标记的方法,包括下列步骤:
(a)布置一对沿光路线的光传送液体以形成可变光学透镜,该液体为不可混合的,具有不同光折射率和基本上同样密度,液体之一在静态下具有形状以便在光学上改变沿光路线穿过所述一个液体趋向标记的光线而具有第一光学特性;和
(b)跨越所述一个液体施加电压以便改变其形状,和在光学上改变光线而具有第二光学特性。
16.如权利要求15所述的方法,其特征在于,还包括发射光到可变透镜的步骤;其中,第一和第二光学特性为沿光路线在相对于可变透镜不同工作距离上的、间隔开的不同的焦平面。
17.如权利要求15所述的方法,其特征在于,还包括从可变透镜接受光的步骤;其中,第一和第二光学特性为沿光路线在相对于可变透镜不同工作距离上的、间隔开的不同的焦平面。
18.如权利要求15所述的方法,其特征在于,还包括在标记上扫描光及视野的至少一个的步骤。
19.如权利要求18所述的方法,其特征在于,还包括在扫描时连续地施加周期性电压的步骤。
20.如权利要求18所述的方法,其特征在于,还包括确定标记是否被成功地扫描和读取的步骤,和在确定标记未被成功地扫描和读取后施加电压的步骤。
