Abstract
A track brake control system for providing braking of a railway vehicle is disclosed. The control system operates upon receipt of an emergency braking command. The control system includes a member for receiving deceleration information from one or more sensing devices. The control system further includes member for comparing the deceleration information with a reference value or reference profile. Further, the control system includes at feast one regulating device for continuously adjusting a braking demand signal to a track brake so as to cause deceleration of the railway vehicle based on the this comparison.
Claims (26)
1. A track brake control system for providing emergency braking of a railway vehicle upon receipt of an emergency braking command, the control system comprising:
means for comparing deceleration information obtained from one or more sensing devices disposed on the railway vehicle with a reference value or reference profile; and at least one regulating device for continuously adjusting a braking demand signal to a track brake controller to cause deceleration of the railway vehicle via friction applied by a track brake based on said comparison.

2. The track brake control system of claim 1, further comprising means to modulate track brake friction in accordance with the braking demand signal.
3. The track brake control system of claim 1, wherein said sensing device comprises a speed measurement device comprising at least one of an accelerometer, a tachometer, or a speedometer.
4. The track brake control system of claim 1, wherein the regulating device is based on a programmable logic control device.
5. The track brake control system of claim 1, wherein the track brake controller modulates the track brake friction by modulation of the track brake voltage or track brake current.
6. The track brake control system of claim 5, wherein the modulation of the track brake voltage or track brake current is performed by pulse width modulation.
7. The track brake control system of claim 5, wherein the regulating device and/or the track brake controller is an integrated solid state device.
8. The track brake control system of claim 7, wherein the integrated solid state device comprises a microprocessor.
9. The track brake control system of claim 1, wherein the one or more sensing devices and/or regulating device is incorporated in the track brake controller.
10. The track brake control system of claim 6, wherein the pulse width modulation signal is received through a train network comprising the at least one regulating device.
11. A track brake control system utilizing a train network for providing emergency braking of a railway vehicle upon receipt of an emergency braking command, the control system comprising:
means for comparing deceleration information obtained via a sensing device disposed on the railway vehicle with a reference value or reference profile; and at least one regulating device for continuously adjusting a braking demand signal to a track brake controller across the train network to cause deceleration of the railway vehicle via friction applied by a track brake based on said comparison, wherein at least the regulating device and the track brake controller communicate with each other using the network.
means for comparing deceleration information obtained via a sensing device disposed on the railway vehicle with a reference value or reference profile; and at least one regulating device for continuously adjusting a braking demand signal to a track brake controller across the train network to cause deceleration of the railway vehicle via friction applied by a track brake based on said comparison, wherein at least the regulating device and the track brake controller communicate with each other using the network.
12. The track brake control system of claim 11, further comprising means to modulate the track brake friction in accordance with the braking demand signal.
13. The track brake control system of claim 11, wherein said sensing device comprises a speed measurement device comprising at least one of an accelerometer, a tachometer, or a speedometer.
14. The track brake control system of claim 11, wherein said regulating device modulates the friction of the track brake by modulation of the track brake voltage or track brake current, the modulation occurring across the network.
15. The track brake control system of claim 14, wherein the modulation of the track brake voltage or track brake current is based on pulse width modulation.
16. The track brake control system of claim 15, wherein the pulse width modulation signal is received through the train network comprising the at least one regulating device.
17. The track brake control system of claim 11, wherein the regulating device is based on one of a programmable logic control device or pre-programmed logic control device.
18. A track brake control system for providing emergency braking of a railway vehicle upon receipt of an emergency braking command, the control system comprising:
one or more sensing devices disposed on the railway vehicle to acquire deceleration information;
means for receiving deceleration information from the one or more sensing devices;
means for comparing the deceleration information with a reference value or reference profile; and at least one regulating device for continuously adjusting a braking demand signal to a track brake across a train network to cause deceleration of the railway vehicle via friction applied by a track brake based on said comparison.

19. The track brake control system of claim 17, further comprising means to modulate the track brake friction in accordance with the braking demand signal.
20. The track brake control system of claim 17, wherein said sensing device comprises a speed measurement device comprising at least one of an accelerometer, a tachometer, or a speedometer.
21. The track brake control system of claim 18, wherein the means for comparison includes a programmable logic control (PLC) device or a pre-programmed logic control device.
22. The track brake control system of claim 21, wherein the PLC device performs the comparison and transmits demand signals to the regulating device.
23. The track brake control system of claim 22, wherein the regulating device receives the demand signals and modulates the track brake friction.
24. A method of modulating brake force in a vehicle upon receipt of an emergency braking command, the method comprising the steps of:
receiving deceleration information from one or more sensing devices disposed on the vehicle;
comparing the deceleration information with a reference value or a reference profile;
determining a braking demand signal based on the comparison;
and continuously modulating brake friction on a track brake according to the braking demand signal.

25. The method of claim 24, comprising:
receiving the deceleration information from the one or more sensing devices via an available network.

26. The method of claim 25, comprising:
transmitting via the available network, the braking demand signal to a regulating device on the track brake.
